What is Local Search Optimization?

Very simply, if you have a local business, it is the process of optimizing your website to be found when someone searches locally.  This is not Paid Search Advertising (PPC), but rather getting your website ranked organically in the main search engines. It is important to consider local search optimization and valuable to be ranked organically (positioned on the left side of the screen) as 70% of people will ignore paid ads.  Below are examples of  local and non-local searches:

How Valuable Is Local Search Optimization?

The value of any keyword or phrase is directly related to how much it describes and relates to your business, services and/or products.  Also, the question must be asked and answered as to how many people search for that keyword.  Once these two questions are answered, you will have a pretty good idea as to the value of your local keyword(s). 

For example, let's take a look at a BMW car dealership in Los Angeles.  Would the keyword "New Cars Los Angeles" be a good local keyword for our dealership to optimize?  Not necessarily!  "New Cars Los Angeles" is still a fairly broad keyword.  It would be more difficult to optimize and very expensive from a PPC (Paid Search Advertising) standpoint.  A much better local keyword phrase would  be "BMW Los Angeles".  This is a much better keyword because it is more descriptive of our dealership and the products they sell.  A number one ranked website for the keyword BMW Los Angeles could get get up to 456 click per day!  That's 13,680 clicks per month.  A PPC campaign that captured the same amount of clicks that an optimized campaign would, could cost upward of $40,000 per month.
